My story…About 9 years ago I was hit with an autoimmune disease.  The flare-up was pretty bad and it was difficult to move around – lots of stiffness and pain. As a result, I lost a lot of muscle mass and strength.  I had already been a student of Barb’s for a few years.  And as I recovered, she tailored my workouts to bring back my strength body part by body part.  Her skill and care played on intergral part in my recovery.


I am also a scuba diver and Pilates has also helped with the physical skills needed – core strength (always important) and breath control.

Barb is a fantastic Pilates instructor.  I started seeing her 2 years after the birth of my second child. I was a competitive runner during high school, college and after.  At age 33, after an ankle injury and two pregnancies, running became painful.  I began experiencing daily back spasms during work and pain prevented me from sleeping well at night. After trying physical therapy with little improvement, I started looking for a Pilates instructor with a rehab background. Barb has an understanding of the biomechanics of the body and how injury disrupts other joints nearby. After a few months of training with Barb, I was no longer in pain. I improved my flexibility and core strength as well as unlearned things in my posture that were contributing to my pain during the day.

As a physician myself, I rarely encounter a physical therapist or physician who has an understanding of postural or muscle imbalances as well as Barb. She creates a program that is specific to her client. Not a one size fits all approach. She looks at the client’s imbalances and determines if they need be more flexible, more mobile or stronger and tailors the exercises to accomplish these goals. I have sent her my own patients who have experienced benefit and avoided surgery.  The results of Pilates have allowed me to get back to working out 5 days per week.
